Chico - 20th Place

Congratulations to Andrea Fischer and her bird Chico.

The Story of Chico - The Little Artist

About seven years ago I stopped at our local pet store
after work. A lady walked in wearing what looked like a necklace of four beautiful baby Lovebirds. All handfed
and very tame. I asked to hold one and immediately
fell in love.
I brought my sweet peachfaced baby home. His name is Chico. His feathers are beautiful. The color of his face
is tangerine, head and chest are chartreuse, turquoise on
his back, and different shades of greens on his wings.
I have found that birds watch every move we make.
When I open his bag of seed, he is inside it before
I know it. When he is out of his cage he flies to my shoulder. If I turn on the water, her hops down my arm and into my cupped hands. He fluffs his wings as the water
lightly flows over him.
Chico likes to hang out with Joey,my Cockateil. They
are good friends. Chico keeps Joey's crest nicely
preened.
Sometimes in the middle of the night, I hear Chico make
the sound of a rubber duck...is he dreaming?
When I walk into my room holding anything to read,
he can't wait to get out. He rattles the doors on his
dishes until I let him out. Immediately he goes to work
using is small beak as a saw to shred whatever I am
holding. Usually a good book, magazine, or important
papers.

I would love just to sit and read with him, but impossible.
He is the little destroyer.
So, since Chico's favorite hobby is shredding,I leave
colorful magazines on my bed for him. Quickly he goes
to work shredding, then gently tucks the strips beneath
his wings.
The colorful strips began taking shape in my imagination
in what would soon become part of a bigger picture.
Since I design notecards for myself,I had an idea to
put Chico's hard work to use.
As I sorted through the colorful strips, I found combinations
of colors that could be used as Palm Trees. Then I came
across many strips shaped like tiny surfboards with
Hawaiian prints on them as well. Perfect to finish off
my cards of Palm Trees. One day I came across a
surfboard which had the name Chico on it!!!! Was I
stoked!!!(old surfer term for jazzed).
I enjoy making these unique cards.
I call it CHICO ART.
He is my buddy as well as coworker.
