Congratulations to Cindy Johnson and her bird Finian.

A Lovebird’s story

I know that most people are human who are entering this contest but I figured if it is about lovebirds why can’t a lovebird submit his story……….

My name is Finian (Finny for short). I am from Northern Virginia. I started out like any other lovebird, meaning I was hatched one day after several warm weeks in a shell. After I was weaned I was sold to a pet store. I lived in this store with a bunch of other lovebirds of all shapes and colors. Now the sad part is… this nationally known pet store did not have any records on me they didn’t even know how old I was or when I was hatched. But that all gets fixed later.

Anyway one day I was hanging out in my cage with a bunch of strange lovebirds that I did not know and then I saw this human come over to my cage and start staring right at me! I thought wow humans don’t have very bright colors and there feathers must be thin cause I can’t even see them! Anyway, this human was a woman and I could tell she had her eye on me. I think I should have been scared but for some reason I was not at all. She had something special, let’s call it instinct but I saw…… trainability!

I knew she would not be able to resist me so needless to say I won her over with my immense charm right away and next thing I know I am in a car headed for my new home. I will say this about the trip. Who taught her how to drive??? I could do better than that! I heard the male human agree with me more than once on the way home!

So we get to the house and the nice lady let me rest for the day, I played the scared card but really I was just happy to have my own space for a nice long nap before I had to start training her. The next morning bright and early, there she was ready for her first lesson. She tried to handle me first thing. Silly human, I had to give her a nibble to let her know who was in charge! Anyway, after about a week I let the woman think she won me over and I would jump on her finger when she said up. The funny thing was she thought she accomplished a great feat, but I just wanted to be higher up, well and the millet I got for letting her think that was pretty good incentive too!

After a few weeks a funny thing happened. I really started to like this silly human who was constantly singing off key to me. Poor thing you have to give her an A for effort though. She sees me react to the singing and thinks I like it but really I am trying to form my first human words…. EARPLUGS! She also keeps telling me “pretty bird” how slow is she? I KNOW I am a pretty bird! But like I said I am starting to like this adorably slow creature. She gave me my own house and toys and gives me treats and even my favorite thing in the world, popcorn! I do wish she would stop trying to give me fruit though, how many times do I have to act like I am dying when I see a banana before she gets it???

We play together a lot. She is really quite cute when I get her onto the floor and make her play with the ball. She swats it back and forth like a cat and sometimes I have to pick it up and give it back to her, I guess she is not very coordinated. When she is bad I have to teach her a lesson by flying up to the top of the curtain rod and sitting there until she gets a chair (my human is short). Well she climbs up the chair and then I have to fly away again to show her I am the boss. I have to chuckle when I think about how annoyed she gets, she calls me by my full name then. After a while I think she has suffered enough so I let her hold me again and give her a little kiss, because after all she is my little human!

A few things my human does that I have not been able to break her of is; trying to feed me veggies I don’t like. I do the whole “why are you trying to kill me act” and she still does not get it. She also has this thing about wanting me to be clean, I just don’t get it, where do you think the expression dirty birdie came from, not all lovebirds like baths! Oh and the whole vacuum thing. What is up with having to disturb my space with that noise making machine! I don’t mind that my seeds and pellets are all over the floor of MY room. Why should she care? I mean after all that fuzzy gray thing she calls Sammy likes to eat my left over seeds that get away from me while I am kicking around in my food dish. I guess she does not want him to have the good stuff though because she keeps telling him no.

She is so easily amused, really the idea pet. I can do just about anything and she thinks it is funny. When I dance because she is playing some great music she just laughs and claps at me. I also amuse her with hanging upside down and bobbing my head. By doing this I have also taught her to dance, although honestly she is not very good at it, but then that is where I get my amusement. She sees me laughing and thinks she is doing good and just keeps doing it more all the while I am about to have a birdie accident in pants because she is sooo goofy and funny.

Some of the tricks I have taught her is the come fetch me trick. I chirp really loud and she comes to my cage and I do the let me out of my cage sign by rubbing my beak on the bars. It works every time she really caught on quick to that one. I have also taught her to feed me new food when I am bored of the seeds I have left after picking though them. I just have to sit on my food dish and squawk a couple of times and she comes and changes my food and gives me a new mixture of seeds and pellets. She has also gotten really good at wearing the correct clothing to amuse me. She knows just the right buttons and strings to wear to give me hours of chewing enjoyment. I just wish she would learn not to squawk when I like to hide out in her shirt.

My human is really nice too. She gave me a birthday and she gives me lots of new toys on that day. She had to make one up since she doesn’t speak parrot and I can’t tell her the real one. I know that she just does not have the capacity to learn parrot so I try to say a few of her human words. Admittedly I am not good at it but somehow she seems to understand. She gets it that when I squawk “baby” that means give me a treat, and when I squawk my name that means pay attention to me and give me a treat.

When I want my human to pay attention to me, some of the things I have taught her is to… hide the remote control, move the mouse pad off the desk (the mouse too). Once when she was being really stubborn I had to teach her a lesson about hair in my face. She was wearing her hair down and I wanted it in a ponytail so I could play with it but she did not take the hint, so I had to jump on her head and get all tangled in her hair. She squawked and squawked and then the male human had to come with scissors and cut her hair to let me out. She learned quickly on that one to put her hair in a ponytail for my amusement. I have to say she did pout a bit about that lesson but seriously it is only hair, get over it, it is not like it is feathers or something! After I taught her this she gave me a bunch of hair thingy’s to play with so I guess she is getting more and more trained by the day!

What I am really trying to say is that these humans are quite good pets! They don’t always listen well in the beginning but after a while they really catch on and when you want to be mean to them all you have to do is give them kisses and they forget all about your bad moods. I am even thinking of sharing my human. I got her to figure out that I need another friend (one is who is on my level so we can have intellectual parrot talks and play the games she is not coordinated enough for). Well she has started the ball rolling and now very soon I will have a friend to help me antagonize her and train her even more! I am going to make sure that my new friend knows all the different ways to train our human pet before he starts his training with her.

I should also mention my biggest training accomplishment. Since my (feathered) family is originally from Africa I am partial to the warmer climates. The winters in Northern Virginia are a bit cold so I thought I should have a change. I actually got my human to move us to Arizona! The trip was a long one and I had to hear my humans squawk about their bad driving habits some more but actually it was fun. I had them playing the radio for me so I could dance and sing to pass the hours on the road. When we would stop for the night at the big cages with the human beds I made sure to loudly announce our arrival. I don’t know why but this seemed to stress my human a bit. It is ok though that is when I use the kisses to calm them down again. After we arrived in our new state I decided hmmm well since we are so close let’s take a trip to the ocean. I have never been to California and figured I would go see if I could find any beach bunny lovies. I didn’t get to see any babes but I got to meet some little humans (even shorter than my human). They were cool and they don’t even mind when you have to poop on them!

I really think that any of you lovies out there looking for a good pet should consider a human. They practically take care of their selves and they are pretty trainable considering their awkward sizes and limited movement. Although they are a bit slow they always seem to come around in the end.
