Francas - 11th Place

Congratulations to Michelle Wolf and her bird Francas.

I had many pets as a child, but never a bird! My Grandmother loved birds, and had several of them as pets. I would often feed her birds while she was on vacation, but didn't have the furthest clue on how to to take care of one myself. When my Grandmother passed away, I decided that I might want a bird. I thought about getting one for four years, and then one day I found her! There sat a little lovebird, and I knew right away that she was the one! She blinked at me over and over, as if to say "Take me home with you please". I named her Francas after my Grandmother.

I found the perfect cage for her, so I thought. It was a big beautiful ornate cage, that matched my living room decor perfectly. On the front of the box was a photograph of two lovebirds sitting in the cage. We put all the little toys we had picked out for her, and the food and water dishes in. All went well, until morning.I was laying awake in bed, and heard that she was awake. I went into the living room, just in time to see her hop through the bars and glide down to the floor. In a panic, I threw a sheet over her and then put her in a large cardboard box. I was scared to death to handle a bird! I then realized that I had a lot to learn.

After buying a cage with the properly spaced bars, I made a vet appointment. I asked a lot of questions, and had her checked out to make sure she was healthy. Our vet explained that she was still a baby because of her dark colored beak. My other resources were library books, the Internet, and Bird Talk magazines, which were borrowed from a friend.I would sit by her cage for hours talking to her, so we could get to know one another. It took me several months just to get her to come out of the cage. I will never forget the first day she came out by herself. I was so excited! The first thing we would learn was for her to step up, without me getting bitten of course. It took alot of patience for Francas , and me too!

Francas has been a part of our family for about ten months now and fits in perfectly. She is fearless. She has put our two boxers, our tom cat, and my husband in their place. She cannot wait to get out of her cage and be a part of our daily routines. She loves to play endlessly with her toy balls with the bells in them. She takes them to the edge of the couch and drops them, waiting for someone to pick them up so we can do it all over again. She loves to come to the dinner table, even though most of her food ends up on the floor. She loves to take showers, screaming and playing like a small child in a sprinkler. Cuddle time is another favorite, I don`t know which one of us enjoys this one the most. She is quite content to sit on my shoulder for hours. I never knew that a bird could be so much fun! I find every! thing she does amazing, whether she is doing flips or just content sitting with me. Francas has the most fun loving personality, and I feel extremely blessed that she is a part of my life.
