Pele - 1st Place

Congratulations to Maureen Hossler and her beautiful bird Pele!

Specialness is in the eye of the beholder and in my opinion my lovebird Pele is the most special lovebird there is.  Pele is a silver-pied peach faced lovebird and she is 5 months old.  She hasn’t gone through her first molt though.  When she has she will look like her father who has a triangular shaped hot pink mark on his forehead and a blushy pink face.

The beauty of this species is what attracted me.  I had finches beforehand but I wanted a bird that I could handle.  Trips to Petsmart is how I saw my first lovebirds.  I thought the peach faced were the prettiest-from their tail feathers to their colorful faces.  My mom went to the book section and picked out a book for us to read.  That book was how we were able to figure out that it is better to get a lovebird of any sort from a breeder and not a pet store.  Once we learned about lovebirds my mother decided that I could have a lovebird for my birthday but I would have to sacrifice all of my other presents.  Searching through adds in the newspaper and on the internet my mom was able to find a breeder an hour and a half from our home in Delaware.  The breeder let us know by email that she had several babies for sale.  We took a trip up in September to decide which one I would get.  There were multiple colors and varieties.

The first set of babies was nice but the birds from the second clutch were more colorful and seemed sweeter.  One of them, Pele, was just the cutest of all.  According to the dates they hatched on Pele would not be available until October.  Even though I really wanted a bird I was willing to wait to get her.  Squeals of joy were heard in the car as we left the breeder’s home that afternoon.

School was tough.  Every Friday for presentation I talked about getting my bird.  Finally I was able to tell my class that I got my bird.  On October 1st we drove up to the breeder’s again but I had a hard decision.  I had been told that Pele was not an energetic bird like myself.  She was shy and quiet.  So it was suggested that I take a different bird.  One that was energetic and loud.  I spent a long time handling all of the birds and finally narrowed it down to two.  Pele and her brother. This male was the quietest of the bunch next to Pele.  My mom told me that once we got in the car I would not be able to change my mind.  I decided to take the boy.  While the breeder was filling out the new paperwork I said goodbye to Pele.  I sat next to her cage.  She was all by herself and she had a forlorn look on her face.  Tears ran down my cheeks and I changed my mind again.  Pele became mine.

After a few days Pele and I developed a bond.  She squawks whenever she sees me, makes a biting signal when she wants a treat and she launches herself at me if I walk by and she is sitting on her playpen.  I can snap my fingers and walk around my house and Pele will march behind me.  When she gets excited she will run with her wings flapping rapidly.

Even though Pele and I are practically best buds we have our differences.  I have always preferred fruits while Pele is a veggie lover.  Pele likes to chew on hard tough toys like rope while I prefer squishy toys like a ball.  Pele is allergic to chocolate which is tough because chocolate is one of my specific pleasures.

In short, everyone but my dad would pretty much think that my Pele is special.
