Simon - 4th Place
Congratulations to Megan Hughes and her bird Simon.
*Mr. Simon Charles Bird*

There are so many wonderful things to say about Simon, I am not sure where to start. First of all, Simon is a six year old, peach-faced lovebird. He is the first bird that has ever owned me, and it was love at first sight. I found my little man at a pet store in a nearby town. He was in an acrylic cube with many other baby birds. When I walked over to them, he ran directly to me and right then and there, I knew he was going to be my best friend.

From the day I brought Simon home, we have been inseparable. Simon takes showers with me, eats with me, we watch television together, and he even helps me with my homework, although he destroys more of it than anything. I always find it humorous to tell my teachers that my bird ate my homework rather than a dog! Even now, Simon loves shredding paper of any sort. He seems to be a perfectionist at it, shredding it into perfect strips, eventually making a doily out of it.
Everyone who meets Simon falls in love with him. He is not your typical lovebird. Most lovebirds are said to bond to one person, well not Simon. He loves everyone. Although he thinks of me as his girlfriend, he welcomes all and loves the attention. While working at a Hallmark store, Simon became our mascot. He would accompany me to work everyday and hang out on my shoulder. Our customers made it a ritual to stop in and visit Simon, one lady even brought him popcorn every week.

Anyone who has ever been owned by a lovebird knows that they have a larger than life personality. Simon definitely does! He is a plump little man, but he is fearless, sometimes too much for his own good! With three big dogs, I used to worry about Simon. But my worries were for nothing. My largest dog, Lilly, has become great friends with Simon. Simon plays on the floor with her and they tend to wreck havoc together, tearing our garbage out of the can!
Simon is a fantastic friend. He is a large part of my family, mainly because he is the center of attention at all times. We often play cards and Simon’s favorite game is to jump in and steal cards to fly away with. This is how he got his nickname, Psycho-Simon!

Simon’s day starts with a good breakfast with me and then the morning’s skritchings. Then Simon takes his spot on the bathroom towel bar to watch me brush my teeth. With a free ride on my shoulder we continue to do chores together. After a while, Simon retreats to his playgym for some snacks. Afterwards, he takes off to his “mansion” in my room in front of his own window.
Simon’s cage is, lets just say, GIGANTIC, and he loves it! My baby’s house is filled with all kinds of toys, shredding ones with bells are his favorite. He loves his assortment of perches and happy huts. But his all time favorite is his treat dish in which he gets his favorite fruit, apple!
After watching out the window and singing to the neighborhood birds, Simon beats up his toys for a while and heads to my bathroom to destroy my silk flowers. Once he feels like he’s done a good job on the flowers, Simon cuddles in them, as if he is saying sorry for tearing them up, and takes a well deserved nap.

Simon has supervised fee reign of the house, so once nap time is over, he flies out to check out the action. In the evenings after we eat dinner together, Simon joins me on the screened in porch. He chirps at the birds in the trees and watches a squirrel that has adopted our backyard.
Around eight at night, Simon is usually well tuckered out from a long day of mischievous play. By this time, he is cuddled up next to my neck in front of the television, awaiting his night time skritching. When it’s time to go to his home, he never gives me a problem. It’s right off to the happy hut after a bunch of kisses and to sleep he goes, waiting for the next fun filled day!

It’s always a new day with Simon, and I love to see what antics he has up his feathers. I never pictured myself having a bird, but now I can not picture myself without Simon. He is certainly considered my child, just with feathers. Simon is the best bird an owner could ask for! He is a great comedian, companion and most of all, he is a great friend who deserves the world!!!

Sincerely,
*Mr. Simon Charles Bird*
