Timmy - 19th Place
Congratulations to Jessica Brost and her bird Timmy.

After losing my first parrot at a young age, I never thought that I would want another bird, at least until I first saw Timmy in a pet store aviary. I had heard of lovebirds, of course, but I had never seen one before, and I was instantly charmed by the pint-sized parrots. As it was, Timmy was the only Dutch Blue Peach Face in an aviary full of other Peach Faces, and something told me that he was going to be my new feathered friend. Unfortunately, our first physical encounter was not under the happiest of circumstances. Soon after I had set up Timmy in his new home, he escaped from his cage only to fly into a fly trap that was still hanging in the kitchen! Luckily, I freed Timmy from the trap with very little damage to his feathers, and he spent hours afterward just cuddled up on my chest.

Once we were best buddies, Timmy’s affectionate, playful nature quickly emerged in the form of whistles and tricks. While lovebirds aren’t known for learning too many words, Timmy soon managed a very credible version of the word, “cookie”, which never fails to delight my husband and me. As far as tricks are concerned, my favorite of Timmy’s antics involves a bottle cap, usually from one of my bottles of water. With Timmy on the floor, I will flick the cap across the carpet, and Timmy will “fetch” the bottle cap for me! Needless to say, Timmy’s puppy-like behavior just sends me rolling in laughter on the floor, and Timmy gets some great exercise out of it too. Finally, my second favorite trick of Timmy’s is what I like to call his Bird Pull-Ups. With Timmy in my right hand and a plastic clothes hanger in my left, I’ll place Timmy on the bottom part of the hanger and watch him pull himself up. The cutest part is how he makes such a big show of pulling himself up, and he caps it all off with a loud jungle trill and a wing flapping session. Timmy really is my greatest source of entertainment and joy, and I’m so glad that I saw him that day in the pet store window.
