The 3rd place winner was a beautiful Orangefaced Australian Cinnamon named Mercy. This entry was the most creative out of all the entries. Mercy is owned by Kelly Cundiff one of our youth submissions. This entry was the only Love Bird Poem we received. It was beautifully written!!

MERCY

It was on Sunday afternoon, the 3rd of July

When my bird, Mercy, decided to fly.

From my deck on the ground, to the tree tops up high

Mercy flew and flew almost touching the sky.

Finally she landed on a very tall pine

But could she fly down – and return to be mine?

We called and we chirped; we whistled and clapped

Yeah, we could see her – but her wings she just flapped.

From branch to branch she flew and she hopped

Our calling and prompting we never did stop.

Lower she came after hours of calling,

While on the deck my mom was still bawling.

At last in the holly, she came to rest

That’s my bird, and she is the best.

Her bright blue and yellow, and orange face

Had finally found a low resting place.

We fished her out – so tired was she

Her freedom enjoyed – but just briefly.

Back in her cage – no longer to roam

You can hear Mercy chirp, “I’m glad to be home”.

I am writing about my beautiful lovebird, Mercy. The poem I am submitting is a true story that happened this past summer. We were out on the deck, enjoying a nice summer day, when my sister, Ashley, opened Mercy’s cage to take her out. That’s where my poem starts!

Mercy is such a wonderful bird. And she’s so smart! She loves to watch Jeopardy! and Law and Order. Actually, she chirps to their theme songs! She likes to take baths, and sit on our shoulders (where she’s “way up high”)! She has taught herself to play the piano – although, I’ll admit, she’s not that good.

Mercy has a beautiful peach face, with a yellow chest, and blue tail feathers. She is very well built and likes to show off. When she escaped, it was her bright colors that we kept our eyes on – following her every move. As long as we could see yellow in the treetops, we knew she hadn’t flown off.

Mercy is a winner – and we LOVE her!
