QUESTION

How do I tell the difference between an Abyssinian male and female?

REPLY - By Kera Groves

** Once mature, Abyssinian males & females are very easily distinguishable.  Upon adult coloration male Abyssinian will have a bright red brow line that will extend across their "forehead".  Females will remain a solid green color with no red present in their coloration.  However; immature Abyssinians are much more difficult to tell the sex.  Some males with have a few red feathers around the eyes that can sometimes go unnoticed.  It has also been said that the wing coverts (on the underside of the wing) will be black for a male & brownish in color for a female.  This method; however, is not 100% accurate.  If you are looking for a young bird of a certain sex it would recommend DNA or surgical sexing for the most accurate result.
