QUESTION - Sent in by Mary H.

A man has tried to sell me a pair of black love birds, not black masked but pure black, but they have the white eye ring. Do they truly exist and if so, how did he obtain this mutation , assuming its a true mutation?

Hi Mary,

I am not sure who this is on the internet trying to sell Black Love Birds but you're are about the 5th person to ask the same question in the last 2 weeks.  There is no Black Love Bird in the Masked. What we do have is what we call a Dark Blue Masked. That simply means that the normal Blue Masked carries 2 factors of Dark, what some call Slate or Mauve. The bird especially if it is a male will have a very black head and the flights and body color will be Dark Grey (this grey can vary in the birds and some will be darker then others but non are black) - there will be white on the bib. The birds are not considered rare.
