QUESTION

What's a blood feather? What do I need to do if one breaks?

REPLY - By Kathy Greaser

A blood feather is a new feather coming in that is still growing. While the feather is growing
it has it's own blood supply. If this feather gets broken it should be pulled from the body.
Just like a dogs claw, it's a main artery and the bird can bleed to death.

This should be done by 2 people. One for holding one for pulling. Hold the bird so the head
is between your index and middle fingers. The palm of your hand wrapped around it's back.
Do not hold the chest too tightly -- the bird has to breathe. Have the other person stretch out
the wing holding the joint securely and look for the feather, you might have to use some
water to wash blood off to be able to see well. Pull the feather then put flour or cornstarch
on the wound and apply pressure till the bleeding stops. Remember you're holding a bird so
not to much pressure.
