A Champion Love Bird is any love bird that has earned a total of 50 points or more as judged at least 3 ALBS panel judges. Also, the bird must have won a 1st place division win in a major show. A major show is one that has 50 or more love birds and at least 3 exhibitors. The point requirement for achieving Champion and Grand Champion status for a bird earning points prior to 1998 is only 20 points. All other requirements remain the same.
Champion or Grand Champion status is achieved on December 31st of each calendar year. Therefore a love bird who is being shown in either the regular or the champion divisions will continue to be shown in its respective division until December 31st of that year. Once a bird achieves Grand champion status, it must be retired from all ALBS competitions. Also, points are assigned to the bird, not the exhibitor. This also means that a bird that already has points shown for the first time by a different exhibitor will retain those original points.
To achieve Grand Champion status, a bird must receive 50 points while being shown in the champion division and also take a 1st place division win in a major show. Then on December 31st of that year, the status of a bird will be changed to Grand Champion and then bird must be retired from all ALBS competitions.
If an exhibitor is unsure of the status of a bird, an e-mail or call should be made to the Points Registrar.
A champion breeder is any exhibitor who has bred five champion love birds. These birds must be bred and exhibited only by the person desiring to become a Champion Breeder. Champion Breeder is a difficult achievement.
