QUESTION

What types of things should I have in my cage?

REPLY - By Kera Groves

Lovebirds are natural clowns!  When chosing what things to have in a cage always keep in mind how long your bird is going to be in the cage per day.  The longer the bird is going to be in that cage the more things you will need to keep him occupied.

The basics!  You will need at least 2 perches.  Depending on the size of the cage you may want more.  It is always good to have at least a couple different shapes or diameter perches to allow their feet to go in different positions.  The next thing all lovebirds enjoy is a swing!  It doesn't have to be fancy to be fun!  My lovebirds adore their swings.  It will keep them content for hours it seems!  Be sure that the swing is the proper size for the lovebirds.  I use at least Parakeet size for them.  I buy plain swings & jazz them up myself with beads, leather & rope.  The next thing you will want in a cage is toys!  Lots & lots of toys!  Lovebirds are wonderful mechanics, they can take almost any toy apart.  If any of my toys have bells, I will find them in the water the next day.  I recommend staying away from toys that are really stringy and can be ingested or cause a bird to get caught in.  A good number of birds have lost toes, feet & their lives to accidently hangings with toys.  Another thing that is good to always have available is a mineral block and/or cuttlebone.  This will provide your bird with the vitamins, minerals & calcium it needs to stay healthy.  It will also help them keep their beak in shape.

Some optional things include: a happy hut which allows snuggling at night & during naptime, a treat dish and/or millet holder, and bathing dish (this would be seperate from their normal water dish).
