"We have a pantry cabinet in the kitchen. it's seven feet tall. Miri has
learned to climb up the curtains and from the highest curtain rod, to hop to
the pantry top. She loves it up there. She can keep an eye on everything
and is master of all she surveys. The question then is how to get her down
when it's time. Although I can reach her by standing on a chair, I've found
a far simpler way of getting her. I just go to the pantry and hold her food
dish up as far as I can reach (about nine inches or so from the top of the
cabinet). Miri quite happily eyes the target and then makes a leap into
space, invariably landing dead center in the dish. She thinks it's a great
game and much fun." |

"After a period of intense play on the sofa, Miri will pause and take a little rest. She curls up on her side, lays her head against one of her toys (generally a small plastic ball), using it for pillow, and draws one foot up, resting it on her head. She'll stay that way for perhaps 30 seconds, sometimes as much as a minute or two. That's all the rest she needs, and then it's back to fun and games.

"I swear, this bird plays me like a violin. Stargate comes on early on Saturday, 4 o'clock instead of 6 o'clock. When the time rolled around, I noticed that Miri was busy dismanteling the world so I decided not to disturb her and I crept into the family room and started watching tv. After about fifteen minutes I began wondering what she was up to, so I went out to the kitchen and had a peek. There she was. She had her full complement of "tv toys" sitting in her transportable food dish, and she was sitting in it too, waiting quietly to be transported with all her gear to the family room. It was instant guilt trip. I picked up the food dish, toys, birdie and all, and off we went to watch tv in the "correct" manner. Who's in charge around here anyway. Don't answer. I know.... I know...."

"Companionship. It just doesn't get any better than always having a little friend who is ready to listen to your concerns, who delights in engaging you in play, and who's affectionate, emotional and honest (and maybe with a tendency to be a bit assertive, dominating, bossy and, on occasion - I'm almost afraid to mention it - 'nippy')."
