Judge's Comments:
The Northeastern Lovebird Exhibitors Association held a 2-day show this year in Harrisburg, PA at the Zembo Mosque Temple. I judged Saturday's show and Lee Horton judged the Regional on Sunday.
The sections were as fallows: Rares 7, all Black-cheeked. Fischer's 18, most in the green Type I with a few in the dilute green, and 5 young blues shown. Masked 7, 3 green, 3 violet, 2 young. Green peachfaced, 23 birds. All but 5 classes were represented with 3 in the opaline green-all. Blue peachfaced 27 birds. The most blues I've seen in a while at a show. Most all classes were filled, Including 2 greywings and 2 opalines. Green pied had only 7 birds. 4 of them were in the pied green 30% yellow. Blue pied 10 birds. 8 in single classes with 1 opaline. American cinnamon had only 7 birds. 2 green, 1 dark green, 1 orangefaced green, and 2 seagreens. Australian cinnamon had 13 birds. 4 of them being orangefaced green and 2 greens. The rest all single classes. Violet peachfaced had 11 birds. 7 of them in Whitefaced Medium class. Longfeathers is our newest section this year and we had 7 birds all single classes with 1 medium making it to the top bench. Champions had 5 birds entered.
All the birds had some conditioning problems which is unusual for this area at this time of year, but in talking to the exhibitors after the show, they alls aid that they were experiencing this and maybe out unusually warm weather had something to do with it. I loved the first place Fischer's(type I). It was in perfect condition and sat rock solid on the perch, very typey as we say. This birde also won the Regional the next day. The Australian Green Cinnamon came in a close 2nd but the Fischer's was just showing too well for it to get first. I was very impressed by the Opalines that I saw at this show, shown by Doree Bedwell. They are coming along nicely with the size of the birds. If anyone remembered the first bids were very small compared to the normal green peachfaced. Well that is no longer the case. They are gaining in size and will soon be a bird to recon with on the show bench. The longfeathers are still a little too relaxed looking to do well. One did make it to the top bench and it was a tighter feather than the others. I still see a lot of them drooping their wings and looking fluffy. This I'm sure is specific to this mutation, but when you get one that is tight feathered and holds its wings close to its body like our standard love bird, it is an imnpressive looking bird. I had a good time judging this show and I hope that the exhibitors did also. I also hope that they learned a thing or 2, which is also a part of judging and attending show.
