Judge’s Comments for Puerto Rico - By Lee Horton
Rare and Eye-rings
What a pleasure to visit Puerto Rico again. The judges were delivered to a fabulous resort on the beach with all the amenities. This resort was all inclusive, all services were included – five restaurants, pools that went on forever, masseuses, you name it this resort had it. When I arrived at the show hall the show committee had decided to divide the Love Birds into two divisions – they had a total of 150 birds. Rares and Eye-rings were judged first, 94 birds and 7 exhibitors. There was a good variety of species and mutations. The Fischer’s were particularly outstanding. The first place bird stood in perfect in a perfect position during the entire show. I never saw this bird off the perch. The color was almost perfect, no yellow, maximum amount of orange, perfect face and bib color and ideal deportment. The second and third place birds were also of excellent quality with large bright white masks. Fourth place bird was a Green Black-cheeked of good quality.
The Masked Love Birds were not as high a quality as the Fischer’s in this show but the Violet in sixth place was a very good bird. It was a pleasure to see two Nyasa Love Birds in the show. They were of good color and proper size. This was a Division of high quality and any of these top birds would do well at the National Show. I want to thank the stewards and the show secretary for doing an excellent job. The show moved along very well considering the number of birds.
The Peachfaced Division at Puerto Rico had seven exhibitors and 65 birds. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place birds were all Orangefaced. The three birds were not only in excellent condition and well trained, they were also large and of excellent quality. Orangefaced usually have a tendency to be narrow, but these birds were wide and full bodied. The Pieds at this show were particularly outstanding. Every Pied had perfect symmetrical markings. I have not seen Pieds this good in years. These Pieds reminded me of the Pat Faris’ Pieds of the 80’s and early 90’s. She always placed in the top bench with her Pieds.
It was a pleasure to see such good birds. If this is any indication I think we are going to see great birds at the National.
A special Thank You to my Secretary for both Divisions, Luis Ramos and all the stewards that made my job a pleasure.
