Judge's Comments:
December 1st, Caguas Puerto Rico. The Society of Cockatiel Breeders and Exhibitors held a 2 division show. Rares and Eyerings in the morning, Peachfaced in the afternoon. There were 58 entries in the morning and 72 for the afternoon. It was a hot and humid and the climate was quite a shock to me, 32 in NY and 98 in PR with 100% humidity. Because of the hot damp weather Puerto Rico had been having for the last 6 weeks a lot of the birds had condition problem.s
Rares: 2 Nyasa and 4 Black-cheeked, 2 normals, and 2 mediums. The Nyasa and the Medium Black-cheeked had shows faults i.e. Showing some rump color. There were 33 Fischer's and 19 Masked. Of the 33 Fischer's there were 19 firsts in class, a challenge to say the least. The Masked section had a nice representation of classes but the most remarkable were the normal green young. 5 really wonderful birds with very good size and clean yellow bibs with nice straight between the yellow and green. All had good masks with good head and neck coverage. The top bench winner was a Green Pied Fischer's, true pied not acquired. It won over the best of the young Green Masks mainly because of condition.
In the afternoon the Peachfaced division had 72 entries with all 9 sections having representation. No Champions, The PF Challenge came with the pieds, both green and blue, 9 and 15. I do not believe I have ever seen so many symmetrical birds with clear flights at one time. I believe my favorite bird of the show was a double dark factor oange faced heavy pied, completely symmetrical. It made it to #7 on the bench was beaten down because of condition factors. Of the 12 birds on the top bench 7 of them were pied, including the number 1 bird. There were a lot of very nice birds at the show and I can say that the cats are going hungry. I believe that the hot very wet weather they have been having in Puerto Rico affected the condition of many birds and that at a different time of the year there might be a shake up on the top bench.
Respectfully Frank Horan
